Unlock A New Level Of Love With HIV Testing

Life can sometimes feel like a game with challenges and achievements galore. Yet, some things should not be played with, like one’s human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) status. A positive HIV status can impact different parts of an individual’s life, especially romantic relationships. Both partners must feel safe, especially if there is a sexual relationship. HIV testing is the most effective way to know one’s status and to take the necessary precautions for all involved. Knowing one’s status is also not limited to older adults. Teens and young adults can use HIV knowledge and resources to have excellent interpersonal and intimate relationships.

Why teens need to think about testing

HIV infections are not limited to older adults who may have more sexual partners or encounters. Teens and young adults are in the early stages of exploring sexual partners and sexuality. Statistics show that young adults are at risk of contracting the disease. Teens and young adults have more access to information due to the internet and social media. However, many still struggle to speak openly about sexual health. A lack of emphasis on HIV and testing means a higher risk of contracting the disease. This group also explores sexuality and feels liberated to engage in more risky behaviors that may lead to HIV. With testing and knowledge, teens are more likely to make better decisions surrounding sexual encounters, especially with monogamous partners.

Test early, test often

Leveling up is not just about finding that special someone at a young age. Both individuals must take responsibility for self-care and HIV prevention. Getting tested early and often means early detection. The sooner an individual is aware of an HIV-positive status, the faster treatment becomes available. Some early antiretroviral medication can drastically reduce the spread of the virus, allowing a longer, healthier life. Eventually, with the right treatment and lifestyle changes, HIV becomes undetectable. Testing should occur at least once yearly with those engaging in sexual activity. Teens and young adults with multiple partners or couples engaging in risky behaviors should consider tests throughout the year. Open communication throughout the testing process is vital for young partners to feel safe. Talk about practicing safe sex and getting tested together to build a strong foundation for the relationship.

Give you and your partner a protection buff

HIV testing is now more convenient and accessible. While some groups still struggle to get testing resources, there has still been a significant improvement. Clinics, doctors, schools, and other stakeholders now provide HIV testing at little to no cost to the patient. There are now easily accessible rapid tests and more detailed blood testing. Couples can get rapid tests together and have initial results in short order. These tests are oral swabs that can identify HIV antibodies through saliva. A more detailed blood test can confirm if someone is HIV-positive or negative, but it does take longer and may be more expensive. Couples can choose the best options based on speed, accuracy, availability, or overall preference.

Unlocking a new level: a healthier you

HIV testing is not only for older adults. Teens and young adults can benefit from regular tests, especially those in sexual relationships. These groups can also learn from an early age the power of taking ownership of one’s sexual health and HIV status. Couples feel safer and more confident and even become advocates for friends and family members. Along with testing, practicing safe sex and abstaining from risky sexual behaviors can prevent HIV transmission long-term. Find a testing location and unlock a new level of health and HIV prevention.
